This book is an autobiography of a Mexican War soldier and scalp hunter. It was the basis for Cormak McCarthy's novel "Bllod Meridian." He is an adventurous young man and his adventures paint a vivid picture of life on the frontier. I am a naive' reader, so I believed that most of his stories were true. They had the tone of a man who had lived them. He is an interesting blend of New England Puritan and adventurer. Some of his adventures involved horrific situations, but he always portrayed them as he being attacked by others. His later life as a prison warden who was sympathetic towards his charges bears out his own early deeds which could have easily led to prison or the gallows. (Amazon customer)
